In this article we begin by addressing the different theories relating to publics and audiences, and then we look at musical festivals as an example of the shift in the role of audiences over the last decade – the shift from a passive attitude to a participatory and total carnal experience. Based on an already long trajectory of analysis related to fruition, consumption and living (GUERRA, 2010, 2015, 2016), in this article we proceed to an ethnographic analysis supported by excerpts from field diaries. We will try to analyze the multiplicity of experiences that take place in the most emblematic Portuguese summer festival, the Paredes de Coura Festival, demonstrating how festivals are one of the main indicators to understand the elaboration and projection of youth (and not only) identities in contemporary times.
