The main objective of this article is to analyse the social representations of alternative rock in Portugal between 1980 and 2010; part of a wider research on the 30 years of modernization of the country (from the post-revolutionary period started in 1974), in which alternative rock is considered a significant social practice within the social, artistic and musical structure of the country. We consider alternative rock to be a subject that can be illuminated by Bourdieu’s theory of fields, which we use to explore the complexity of the relationships that substantiate the underlying structures (of bands, musicians, agents, venues, publishers and promoters) of Portuguese alternative rock. The data used is the result of a long-term research conducted between 2005 and 2010, in which in-depth interviews were conducted with over 200 individuals involved in the production and publishing spheres of the Portuguese alternative rock segment.
