Augusto Santos Silva

 

Augusto Santos Silva has been President of the Portuguese Republic Assembly since 29 March 2022. He holds a PhD in Sociology from ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon (1992). He is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto. He holds a PhD in sociology from the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) and an aggregation in social sciences from the University of Porto. Augusto works in epistemology and methodology of the social sciences, sociology of culture, and political science and theory. Santos Silva regularly intervenes in the media, having been a columnist for the national newspapers Público, Diário de Notícias, and Jornal de Notícias, and a commentator for TSF, RTP-N, and TVI24. Between 1999 and 2011, he held public offices, including as a Member of the Assembly of the Republic and Minister of Education, Culture, Parliamentary Affairs, and National Defence. Since November 2015, he has been in demand again for the exercise of public functions as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the XXI Constitutional Government. He has served in the following governments: XXII Constitutional Government as Minister of State and Foreign Affairs (2019-2022); XXI Constitutional Government, as Minister of Foreign Affairs (2015-2019); XVIII Constitutional Government, as Minister of National Defense (2009-2011); XVII Constitutional Government, as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs (2005-2009); XIV Constitutional Government, as Secretary of State for Educational Administration (1999-2000), Minister of Education (2000-2001) and Minister of Culture (2001-2002). He was a Member of the Assembly of the Republic in the IX and XII legislatures (2002-2005; 2011).
